Your Guide to Preparing for Life After Birth

The transition to motherhood can feel overwhelming, and when you're pregnant, you're probably thinking about the birth - but what about what comes after the birth? Preparing for postpartum can make a huge difference in your experience as a new mom.

That’s why I’m so excited to welcome you to the Postpartum Prep Podcast! I’m Ceridwen, a postpartum doula and lactation counselor, and I believe that preparing for postpartum is just as important as preparing for birth - and that having the right information can help you feel more confident, grounded, and ready for the journey ahead.

Why Postpartum Prep Matters

It’s easy to focus all your energy on the birth itself. After all, that's what everyone talks about. But what about what happens after? Postpartum is one of the biggest transitions you’ll ever experience, and having the right information can make all the difference in how you navigate those early weeks and months.

I created this podcast because I know firsthand how powerful it can be when new moms feel informed and supported. When I had my own baby, I thought I was prepared, but once my baby arrived, there were so many questions I didn’t even know I’d have. The truth is, in motherhood, there isn’t always one “right” answer - things are often messy and unpredictable. But having the right information, along with the support of others, can help you feel empowered to trust yourself and your decisions.

That’s the heart of this podcast: to support you by sharing what I’ve learned - both personally and professionally - so you can feel more confident and grounded as you step into motherhood.

Why Information is Key for New Moms

The truth is, I’ve had this blog for a while to support expecting moms - but no one ever seemed to read it! I realized that you’re so busy (with having your baby’s arrival to prepare for!) so a podcast might be a better way to get this critical information to the pregnant women who would benefit the most. You deserve to have this information as easily accessible as possible, because knowledge gives you power!

Here's how:

  1. Informed Choice: With the right information, you can make decisions that align with your values and your baby’s unique needs. For example, I remember feeling worried about my baby’s sleep. I had read so much about how much sleep babies should get, but my baby was sleeping less than the recommended amount. After learning about evidence-based information on baby sleep totals from the Sleep Foundation, I realized my baby was actually within the normal range. That knowledge helped me stop worrying, trust that my baby was just fine, and feel secure in my decision to not interfere with his sleep. This is how information supports informed choice - being able to make decisions that feel right for you and your baby.

  2. Preventative Care: Knowing what to expect can help prevent some common challenges. For instance, learning about breastfeeding - such as how to tell if your baby is latched correctly - can set you up for success. When you have information about signs that breastfeeding is going well (or not!), then the sooner you can catch issues and take action before they become bigger problems. Information also helps you identify and combat myths.

  3. Problem-Solving: Let’s be real: postpartum can be unpredictable. No amount of preparation will cover every challenge, but having a foundation of knowledge - about what’s normal, when to seek help, and how to advocate for yourself - can make it easier to handle tough moments. Information won’t solve everything, but it can help you feel anchored and confident when you need it most.

“It’s not about having all the answers ahead of time - it’s about having enough information to feel anchored, even when things feel uncertain.”
