Becoming a mother is transformative - and overwhelming. As you step into this new chapter, unsolicited advice from everyone can make you feel even more uncertain. The truth is, not all advice works for every new mom.

In today’s post, I’m sharing why letting go of generic postpartum advice and focusing on what works for YOU is the best way to thrive in motherhood.

Let’s explore why one-size-fits-all advice just doesn’t cut it in the world of motherhood - and tune into Episode 2 of the Postpartum Prep Podcast to dive in deeper.

The Problem with Generic Postpartum Advice

We’ve all been there: a well-meaning friend or relative offering advice like, "Sleep when the baby sleeps." Sounds simple, right? But here’s the catch:

  • What if your baby only naps for 20 minutes?

  • What if you’re struggling to even find time to eat, let alone nap?

When advice doesn’t fit your situation, it can leave you feeling like you’re doing something wrong. That’s the problem with generic advice: it doesn’t consider your unique needs, leading to self-doubt and unnecessary stress.

Why One-Size-Fits-All Doesn’t Work in Motherhood

Every mom’s journey is different. Your experience won’t look like anyone else’s - and that’s perfectly okay! For example:

  • Breastfeeding might come easily - or it could be a challenge.

  • Your baby might be calm - or a little more sensitive.

  • Your recovery from childbirth could be quick - or it might take time.

When all of our experiences are so different, the reality is: what works for one mom may not work for you - and that’s where the problem with advice comes in.

When Advice Misses the Mark: Real-Life Examples

Sometimes, advice isn’t just unhelpful - it’s completely wrong for your situation.

Example 1: Should you Sleep Train Your Baby?

If your baby has sleep apnea or other underlying issues, this advice could be not just unhelpful - it might even be dangerous. If you have concerns about your baby’s frequent wakings, you might like Rachel from @heysleepybaby’s blog post about sleep red flags to learn more about physiological issues that can disrupt babies’ sleep.

Example 2: Do you need to Practice more Self-Care as a new mom?

Self-care is essential, but if you’re dealing with postpartum anxiety or depression, a bubble bath won’t cut it. It’s crucial to address the root cause.

This is why I take a person-centered approach. I listen, understand your situation fully, and offer personalized options.

“You are the expert on your baby, your body, and your life.”

The Person-Centered Approach to Postpartum Support

As a postpartum doula, I don’t give you a list of “shoulds.” I help you uncover what works for YOU.

  • It’s about listening deeply to your needs.

  • It’s about encouraging you to find what fits your values and lifestyle.

Instead of imposing advice, my goal is to support your unique journey. I’m here to help you feel empowered, not to tell you how to be a mom.

Why This Matters

I believe that when postpartum support is rooted in empathy and non-judgment, it leads to growth. You begin to trust yourself more deeply and feel confident in your choices. Empowerment comes from tuning into your own instincts, not from following generic advice.

“Motherhood isn’t one-size-fits-all. Every mother, every baby, every family is unique. What works beautifully for one mom might not work at all for another - and that’s okay.”
